Cyanotype • analog photographic process
Sat. and Sun. November 18—19, 1-6 p.m.

One of the world’s first female photographers – Anna Atkins – published the first book exclusively illustrated by photographs as early as 1843/44. For this purpose, she used a delightful technique of analog photography: the cyanotype. Through this technique photo negatives as well as objects, materials or stencils can be exposed to UV light and captured on paper. In a relatively short time an interesting “impression” of the exposed original, colored in shades of blue, is obtained.

Participants will be introduced to the technique of cyanotype. In the workshop, a light-sensitive liquid is first applied to a flat material. During this process, an important design decision is being made. Day 1 is dedicated to developing the subject, to the application of the liquid and to doing initial exposure tests. On the second day of the workshop you can experimen and print a complete edition It is possible to work up to the format DIN A3.
Saturday 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.: introduction, working out an idea, preparing the paper / material to be exposed, working out the motif, series of exposures, possibilities of correction.
Sunday 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.: further work on the motifs, exposure, signing of test and edition prints.
Material: suitable paper and other materials needed will be provided. You are welcome to experiment with materials you bring along. If you wish to expose digital motifs, they can be printed on location: we have computers, printers and transparent paper up to A4 size. So you can also experiment with font, etc.
