Portrait of Oliver Siebe

Oliver Siebe lives and works as an architect in Berlin. Since 2020, he has been printing his graphics, focusing on architectural representation, in the Druckgraphik Atelier.

What fascinates you most about etching?

What is interesting about etching is the presence of the printing process. The printing forme creates an embossing in the sheet, making the physical force exerted by the press legible. In addition, material with special haptic, visual, and olfactory properties excites me. From the printing plate made of zinc sheet to the strongly pasty ink, the cover varnishes, the tile of the printing press or the thick handmade paper … all elements in the studio have a very special character.

Where do you get your inspiration for motifs from? Can you recommend sources?

My everyday professional life strongly influences the choice of motifs. The prints in my upcoming exhibition all deal with architectural themes.

Which artists do you find particularly interesting?

I am fascinated by the plaster casts of Rachel Whiteread. By reversing space and body, a different way of seeing and reading things becomes possible.

I also learned a lot from the etchings of Eduardo Chillida. (Link to 14 minutes documentary) His printing plates are not only motif carriers, but through their free forms they themselves become the subject of the graphic. The whole sheet is understood as object and sculpture.

The content of the exhibition is an artistic examination of the architectural concept of the Bundesrat’s building extension in Berlin, which is still in the planning stage. The building was designed by architect Max Dudler, in whose office Oliver Siebe has been involved in the planning of the project since 2018.
