Participants will be introduced to the techniques of etching. By means of a simple drypoint etching, the principle of intaglio printing is made comprehensible. With simple tools, wonderful motifs can be created in no time at all, which can be printed with different colours.
This workshop is especially suitable for beginners. “I can’t draw” is no excuse in this workshop. The special character of the incised lines also lends value to scribbles. The embossing typical of gravure printing is also convincing to the touch.
Procedure: short introduction, preparation of the acrylic plates and paper for the folded cards, work on the plates, test prints, possibilities of correction, print runs and card processing — and the Christmas greeting cards are ready!
Material: 1 acrylic plate in DIN-A6 format is included in the workshop price, paper will be charged according to consumption. Consumables (paint, wipe gauze, thinner, etc.) are included in this bill, tools are provided. Current prices are listed on our price page.

The great engraver Albrecht Dürer already produced some masterpieces of etching. With the development of a suitable copper base, the line etching technique was perfected. No less a figure than Rembrandt, the “magician of etching”, brought this discipline to perfection. New techniques developed, such as aquatint etching, which reached its peak with Goya. To this day, these processes of the great masters have lost none of their fascination. Once you have conquered the high art of the various techniques of etching, you will remain addicted to them.
Intaglio printing becomes particularly exciting when the classic paths are left behind and techniques such as the sugar blasting technique or toner wash are incorporated into the motifs. In this workshop format, prior knowledge is required. The basic principle of aquatint etching should be understood. Now all the knowledge can be turned upside down and new things can be tickled out of the records! We will explore the sugar blasting technique and toner wash. It can and should be done experimentally.
Participants will be introduced to the various possibilities of sugar blasting technology and toner wash
Day 1, 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.: Introduction, preparation of zinc plates and paper, working with sugar sprinkling technique and toner wash technique, test prints, possibilities for correction
Day 2, 13.00–18.00: Further work on the plates, printing, signing of test and print runs/final meeting
Material: Zinc, acrylic plates and paper can be purchased as required / consumables (paint, thinner, etc.) are included in this statement, tools are provided. Current prices are listed on our price page.

The graphic technique monotype is often arrogantly dismissed as »kids’ stuff« because its possibilities are misunderstood. It is still practiced by many recognized artists. Nowadays it is extremely rare to see such prints in contemporary exhibitions, but in the Berggruen Collection in the Stüler Building hang some wonderful prints by Paul Klee and among many others H. Matisse, Ch. Rohlfs and H. Janssen worked with this technique.
Through monotypes (often mistakenly called rubbing) only originals / uniques can be produced. It is created by a single impression from a plate on which a thin layer of ink has previously been applied to. This simple approach is very expressive though and makes experimenting worthwhile. Further color layers can be applied on top. Participants will use experimental creativity to learn the »secrets« of black and white, multi-color, stencil and other monotypes. Different effects can be made by playing with tools, color mixes, pressure applied and of course by using different papers. A lot of prints are created in a very short time, for which only a few utensils are needed.
Day 1, 2 p.m.—5 p.m.: Introduction and working/printing on/on the plates/paper
Material: paper sized A4 to A3 80-120 gr., approx. 40 sheets per participant, as well as other material (paint, thinner, etc.) will be provided.

The two-day course offers an exciting introduction to two fascinating printing techniques: drypoint etching and chine collé. On the first day, participants will immerse themselves in the world of drypoint etching, learning how to create and print fine lines on zinc plates. Various tools and metals will be presented, and participants will have the opportunity to create their own prints. In addition to practical exercises, there are technical tutorials on paper preparation, ink mixing and various printing techniques. Retouching and drying techniques are also covered.
The second day will focus on the technique of the Chine Collé, in which colored paper is embedded during printing. Participants learn how to make rice glue and can choose from a variety of materials such as Japanese paper, GDR bags, and maps to enrich their prints. Individual graphics are created by integrating the printing plates created on the first day into the Chine Collé technique. Special drying techniques for Chine Collé graphics will also be discussed.
Finally, the exchange round offers participants the opportunity to inspire each other and provide feedback while presenting their own works. The instructor also shares some of her own graphics and encourages participants to express themselves creatively and experiment. It’s a wonderful opportunity to dive deep into the world of printing while creating space for individual expression and artistic development.
Participants will receive a hand-out on the printing techniques covered and a list of materials.
Material: Printing inks, printing gauze, paper glue and classic etching tools are provided. Zinc plates, paper according to consumption, see price sheet
Please bring: Papers that can be glued in (coloured and old papers, letters, drawings, foils, maps, wrapping paper, book pages, receipts); waterproof marker
Sat. and Sun. 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break

One of the world’s first female photographers – Anna Atkins – published the first book exclusively illustrated by photographs as early as 1843/44. For this purpose, she used a delightful technique of analog photography: the cyanotype. With the help of these, photo negatives as well as objects, materials or stencils can be exposed to UV light and captured on paper. In a relatively short time, an »impression« of the exposed original, colored in shades of blue is obtained.
Participants will be introduced to the technique of cyanotype. In the workshop, a light-sensitive liquid is first applied to a flat material. During this process, an important design decision is already made. Therefore, Day 1 is dedicated to working out the subject, applying the liquid and initial exposure tests. On the second day of the workshop, an edition can be printed and worked with various experiments. It is possible to work up to the format Din A3.
Saturday 13.00-18.00 – introduction, working out an idea, preparing the paper / material to be exposed, working out the motif, series of exposures, possibilities of correction.
Sunday 13.00-18.00 – further work on the motifs, exposure, signing of trial and edition prints.
Material: suitable paper and the other materials needed will be provided. You are welcome to experiment with materials you bring along. If you wish to expose digital motifs, computers, printers and foils up to A3 size are available to create the negative. This way you can also experiment with font etc.

There is nothing more exciting than experimentation and the desire to do something – especially when it comes to discovering something of your own in art and graphics. This workshop aims to expand artistic expression and in doing so pushes the boundaries of classic printmaking.
In the morning of the course, we will dive into the world of drypoint etching and explore the variety of tools and techniques. We use a selection of unconventional printing media such as offset plates, milk cartons and plastic plates and zinc. Soon the first fascinating etching plates were created.
In the afternoon, we will expand our range of tools with a collection of exotic instruments. It’s a lot of fun to use all kinds of things that change surfaces. Tools for bookbinders, saddlers, car mechanics and even broken carpentry tools provide fantastic impressions.
Even your own body can serve as a tool by jumping on pressure plates that lie on sand and stones. The focus is not on perfect pictures, but on experiencing the creative process and the fun of experimenting. The participants will create unusual unique pieces that they can take home.
Material: Printing inks, printing gauze, paper glue and classic etching tools are provided. Zinc plates, paper according to consumption, see price sheet

The printmaking studio has existed since 2005 and after several relocations found a home at the centrally located location in Bötzowkiez, in the middle of Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. At the beginning of 2022 there was a smooth change of studio directors, with a few changes concerning the offers and premises. Cyanotype workshops and team / company events are now held on a regular basis.
In our cozy workshop — amid old printing presses, the smell of inks, paper, and letterpress cabinets covered in history — the clock ticks a little slower. Leaving the fast-paced everyday life outside the studio doors, a wide variety of activities, exhibitions and get-togethers take place in the Atelier. Warm tea, small bites and the appropriate music is never missing, adding to the charming and pleasant atmosphere.
The culinary offer can be adapted for company and Christmas events by arrangement. A small kitchen with stove top, refrigerator and dishwasher are available. Appointments are possible during the week and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.. The following formats are suitable for a workshop lasting approximately 4 hours:

Individual motifs (postcard DIN A6 format) are scratched into an acrylic plate with etching needles. The plates are then covered with ink using a special technique. The final print is then created by pressing the paper on the acrylic plate through the etching press.
Small editions are produced, which can also be used as Christmas cards. The individual prints are also a haptic experience due to the typical embossing and texture of the cotton paper.

Rolled out color plates — ready for use in monotypes
Monotype • unique pieces with oil colors
The monotype technique is particularly suitable for producing a large number of prints in a short time, all of which are uniques. After a brief introduction and examples from art history, you will work by rolling, scraping, or drawing directly on the back side of the paper which is placed on top of colored plates; by applying pressure the oil color is transfered to the paper. Fantastic structures and shapes can be created. You will learn about printing techniques as well as tools and machines used in an art print shop.
