A cyanotype from Anna Atkin’s book “British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions” from 1843
One of the world’s first female photographers – Anna Atkins – published the first book exclusively illustrated by photographs as early as 1843/44. For this purpose, she used a delightful technique of analog photography: the cyanotype. Through this technique photo negatives as well as objects, materials or stencils can be exposed to UV light and captured on paper. In a relatively short time an interesting “impression” of the exposed original, colored in shades of blue, is obtained.
Cyanotype prints in water bath after exposure
Participants will be introduced to the technique of cyanotype. In the workshop, a light-sensitive liquid is first applied to a flat material. During this process, an important design decision is being made. Day 1 is dedicated to developing the subject, to the application of the liquid and to doing initial exposure tests. On the second day of the workshop you can experimen and print a complete edition It is possible to work up to the format DIN A3.
Saturday 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.: introduction, working out an idea, preparing the paper / material to be exposed, working out the motif, series of exposures, possibilities of correction.
Sunday 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.: further work on the motifs, exposure, signing of test and edition prints.
Material: suitable paper and other materials needed will be provided. You are welcome to experiment with materials you bring along. If you wish to expose digital motifs, they can be printed on location: we have computers, printers and transparent paper up to A4 size. So you can also experiment with font, etc.

Inked drypoint etching on acrylic plate just before printing.
The printmaking studio has existed since 2005 and after several relocations found a home at the centrally located location in Bötzowkiez, in the middle of Prenzlauer Berg in Berlin. At the beginning of 2022 there was a smooth change of studio directors, with a few changes concerning the offers and premises. Cyanotype workshops and team / company events are now held on a regular basis.
In our cozy workshop — amid old printing presses, the smell of inks, paper, and letterpress cabinets covered in history — the clock ticks a little slower. Leaving the fast-paced everyday life outside the studio doors, a wide variety of activities, exhibitions and get-togethers take place in the Atelier. Warm tea, small bites and the appropriate music is never missing, adding to the charming and pleasant atmosphere.
The culinary offer can be adapted for company and Christmas events by arrangement. A small kitchen with stove top, refrigerator and dishwasher are available. Appointments are possible during the week and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.. The following formats are suitable for a workshop lasting approximately 4 hours:

Individual motifs (postcard DIN A6 format) are scratched into an acrylic plate with etching needles. The plates are then covered with ink using a special technique. The final print is then created by pressing the paper on the acrylic plate through the etching press.
Small editions are produced, which can also be used as Christmas cards. The individual prints are also a haptic experience due to the typical embossing and texture of the cotton paper.

Rolled out color plates — ready for use in monotypes
Monotype • unique pieces with oil colors
The monotype technique is particularly suitable for producing a large number of prints in a short time, all of which are uniques. After a brief introduction and examples from art history, you will work by rolling, scraping, or drawing directly on the back side of the paper which is placed on top of colored plates; by applying pressure the oil color is transfered to the paper. Fantastic structures and shapes can be created. You will learn about printing techniques as well as tools and machines used in an art print shop.
